Men's Ministry
An Easter Thought for
men...We Make Everything a Competition!
So how did your tournament
brackets go this year? How was your hunting season? Have you purchased
your fishing license yet?
Are you like me and think
about who caught the biggest fish, who owns the biggest TV or who bagged the
biggest buck last season?
Does reality set in for you
as it does for me? When you realize you’re not the fastest guy at Tuesday night
men’s basketball, or you don’t have the newest TV at home and for those of you
men who hunt and fish with me, rarely do we come away with the biggest trophy
(although sometimes we do pretty well)!
Often I am reminded of how
shallow competition can be (especially when I am losing). Yet as we approach
Easter John’s Gospel records one of the most interesting competitions of all
time. A race to the empty tomb between John and Peter, in John Chapter twenty
verses 3-8…
“So Peter and the other disciple started for the
tomb. Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the
tomb first. He bent over and looked in at the strips of linen lying there but
did not go in. Then Simon Peter, who was behind him, arrived and went into the
tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there, as well as the burial cloth that
had been around Jesus' head. The cloth was folded up by itself, separate from
the linen. Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also
went inside. He saw and believed.”
As ministry to men at Genoa
increases in 2009 from our prayer breakfast, businessmen’s lunch, basketball and
Bible in a year groups to our growing Golf league and many other new groups of
men both large and small, let’s resolve now to compete in only one thing.
Racing to see Jesus!
Men, let’s resolve to look
to Him, our risen savior, let’s run to Him as often as we can. John (the other
disciple) though he arrived first waited for the more senior member (Peter) to
enter the tomb, even though John had won the footrace.
We need to be patient with
each other as we move forward together. Let’s never fuss, but compete in only
the best ways which bring glory to our good God.
Happy Easter men of Genoa –
I’m praying only the best for us in 2009 as we grow in the Lord together and all
of us win!
